tortoise

A really nice spot, on a hillside with a view over the city.
Various plots of plants (poisonous, mortal and magical…).
The highlight: this rare tortoise which was a delecassy in Roman times, now protected and living an easy lazy life in Trieste.

Still in Trieste! Actually we have a bit of a problem, one of us has forgotten passeport and so we can’t go over Croatian border…. so in the mean time… we are loving the city which is now in my top ten….

miramare

Castello Miramare: a beautiful castle on sea front with a tragic story: that of Ferdinando Massimiliano G. d’Asburgo and his young wife, Carlotta, daughter of Leopold I of Belgium. The castle is surrounded by a parc and the waters are protected.

Further down, is a little resort where one can swim and eat buonissimi “spaghetti alle vongole”.

Eat at “Alla Sorgente” the best trattoria in Trieste, it’s run by Mirsada.
There are 5 tables, about 15- 20 seatings, the kitchen is open-plan and decorated with wine bottles, fresh herbs and flowers.
Mirsada’s makes her own pasta, try her “maltagliati allo scogliero”, cut fettucine with sea-shells. She also does a delicious “gluten-free fritto misto” with rice flour.
All deserts are homebaked.

Via della Sorgente, 2 – closed sunday & monday

We met a Antwerp couple there on a city trip to Trieste. The lady is a journalist at the “Morgen”, a belgian (flemish) newspaper. They had found the restaurant by chance too and were so enchanted that they had dinner there every evening. She will probably publish an article about it.

See some super typography…
Italian cat purring on car… they have very angular faces…
Strange echinacea: at a closer look, they are spray painted!…
Some Triestino graffiti…
Drink Gingerino: typico aperitivo analcolico… In Trieste aperitif time seems to be a ritual, people gather at bar terrace, drink red liquids (gingerino, aperol…) or white wine, with crisp and salty biscuits, while chatting. Dolce vita!
