Welcome back to the Meert nest…
While MaxiMeert took it easy in bed, MiniMeert took in steezy (style/easy) and gave us a wicked lesson on Skate!

Ride, Steezy, Mongol, Regular, Goofy, Street… these are some of the terms used in skateboarding.
He explained the history of skate from the west coast surfers to the east coast NY streets along with the different styles and the rules, which are many!
We watched him demonstrate a virtual skating game on the screen and many cool youtube moovies on skate.
The most amazing was this Japanese one, revolutionary because its not just a standard skate video but they play with the codes: the fish eye lens, the dress code, the colours, use crazy props but most importantly they bend loads of skating rules: skating mongol style, putting two feet down etc…
So it seems the Japanese are the most innovative for the moment not only because they break rules but mainly because they are taking advantage of Japan’s urban and futuristic architecture and inventing new tricks around it.

Silex Lexx

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Opening: Wednesday, 17 June 2010
18:00 – 21:00
17 June – 15 July 2010
at Pianofabriek,
Fortstraat = Rue du Fort, 35
1060 Sint-Gillis = Saint Gilles

Where is my drawing? What have you done with my tools?
The second episode of Silex Lex(x) reunites a team of talented artists, illustrators, architects and graphic designers in an ongoing process of works and tools sharing.
The experiment with hand drawing tools raises the question of how they shape, interfere and re-choreograph each other’s styles and habits.
If no open source software’s and computers are involved this time, the question of collaborative work, independence of production and openness to results remains.
Original pieces are combinations of layers designed by the artists, printed and mixed together with the Plus-tôt-Te-Laat Risograph.
Come and enjoy the results of this new experiment.

Combined risographies by:
Nurse, Harrisson, Lodovico Corsini, Bitsy Knox, Carole Louis, Julien Meert, Martin Meert, PICA PICA, Benoit Plateus, Jonathan Poliart, Alexandra Vandenbrande.

Assisted by:
Axel PTTL and Lodovico Corsini

Some picts of the opening….

The wall.
The prints: the images were generated with the open source computer program Inkscape. Each participant made a few prints which were then mixed together, in different layers thus creating different combinations.
In the background, the risograph machine and prints for sale.

For a couple of weeks, some Cats and others have been reuniting around Harrisson for what he calls “Invisible University” lessons on typography, the letter, and fonts. The 2 hour sessions consisted of him talking about the different aspects of type and how to arrange it in the grid, thus showing us his favourite books and grand masters from his large graphic design book case.
Last night we had a playful time in the +nurse+ studio, with the aim of participating in a competition on T-shirts and Typography. So we gathered round a few sheets of vynile, beer, crisps and a hot press.
Here are a few picts of the hand-cutting session….
